Our operational employees are vital to ensure that we provide a safe, secure and decent environment to our service users.
We pride ourselves on putting the service user at the heart of everything we do. Our operational employees are responsible for the day to day running of our sites and will demonstrate our BIONIC culture both with our service users and fellow colleagues.
Our Detention Custody Officers (DCOs) are responsible for providing a safe and supportive environment for people entering the UK to seek asylum during a difficult and often stressful point in their lives.
They are at the forefront of ensuring that their basic needs, such as safety, warmth and food, are met and that the initial process of entering the country is as worry-free as possible. Our DCOs will also ensure they receive the support they need throughout their stay in our residential holding rooms (RHR).
I'm proud of the skills I have developed to make a difference to those in our care through professionalism, care and empathy. In the variety of jobs falling within the role; escorting, identifying vulnerable or at-risk persons, and ensuring they are well looked after whilst in our care. I greatly enjoy working alongside the other agencies and building collaborative working relationships.
Our Detention Custody Managers (DCMs) will provide people management support to our Detention Custody Officers to enable them to thrive in their role of supporting vulnerable people. They will also manage the day-to-day operations across the site, so everything can run smoothly and individuals in our care are given the support they so desperately need. Our DCMs create an inclusive and supportive environment for our employees and service users; a diverse population from a variety of backgrounds, all with different experiences, faiths, beliefs and cultural values. They manage and develop their team, so they are equipped to prioritise the comfort, respect and decency of those in our care.
The best thing about working as a DCM at MTC is the team I work with. The other managers happily offer support with learning the role and guidance with career progression and management skills. It is fulfilling to know that each day, whether working on long term projects or day-to-day duties, I am part of a larger drive towards providing the best care for vulnerable adults.
Roles within our SMT could include Site Manager, Contract Manager and Deputy Contract Manager. This team leads our onsite operations to ensure we are providing a safe and supportive environment for persons in our care, in line with our contract requirements. Our SMT are at the forefront of ensuring that our services provide a high quality, successful and empathetic approach to processing individuals arriving in the UK. They develop and deliver an operational strategy which accommodates our ever-changing population, leading and developing their teams to deliver our services in way that holds MTC's values at the heart of everything we do.
We're all working to a common goal by looking at all department areas and ensuring key areas of the operation are functioning properly in achieving our contractual obligations.
Our Use of Force Instructors deliver our control and restraint and personal safety training to operational colleagues, which sits closely alongside our conflict management and de-escalation training. Where needed, our teams must be trained to use reasonable force to restrain an individual for their own safety or the safety of others. Our use of force team ensure that all new and existing employees are trained in use of force techniques and able to deploy these practices in a safe and humane way. This is a highly sought after career path for those working in the custody and detention sector and holds a great deal of responsibility and accountability for those deploying the training, and quality assuring operational practices after incidents occur.
As a Use of Force Instructor, I have the opportunity to train and educate others on important techniques and skills that can potentially save lives and ensure safety in challenging situations. It also directly contributes to maintaining a safe and secure environment, for both employees and the people we work with, which is crucial for MTC.
Our Operations Support Officers (OSOs) provide essential support to our operations, with key responsibilities including security and safety of the site through patrols and fixed post security, visitor and monitoring checks, communications and information sharing through our control room and other administrative duties. This enables their DCO colleagues to focus on the meaningful interactions and support offered to the people in our care.
The best part about being an OSO and working in the control room is working in a busy environment for 12 hours every day, while looking after all MTC employees, and making sure everyone has all the necessary equipment needed to perform their job safely and efficiently.
